Time permitting he would like to develop some lab assignments for his Anthr 110, Human Origins course that would involve the use of graphing in data collection. |
| Art
History - Mary Wills - Edmonds Community College - mwills@edcc.edu Mary is planning to begin work in creating a course that is being offered Spring 2002 that integrates Art History and Physics. The course will focus on the Renaissance. Students will be working on projects that involve the design and construction of cathedrals and machines, as well as the advent of perspective in art and the use of perspective machines. For a final project students will use their knowledge of physics and art history to create a machine designed or similar to design of those of the renaissance period. Mary taught a MAC course in Art History with Deann Leoni (mathematician) last spring. In that course students completed projects using mathematics in creating models of cathedrals and rose windows, illuminated manuscripts and perspective. The students learned the mathematics of proportions and the golden ratio. Mary and Deann's class can be reviewed on the Projects part of the website. |
| Biology
-Heather McKean - Eastern Washington
University - heather.mckean@mailserver.ewu.edu Heather worked closely last year with Barbara Alvin (our assessment consultant) to examine how she assesses for mathematical skills in her biology course. Together they found some interesting issues on the separability of math and biology in assessment as well how non-math instructors need to make think explicitly as to the level they wish to assess for math skills in their activities. Heather and Barbara will be presenting their results as well as working with participants on their assessment plans in a workshop on Thursday. Heather is planning to create more projects incorporating math into her biology class as well as work with the Eastern contingent to begin to create a MAC project for the university. |

Ruth Hayes - The Evergreen State College - hayesr@evergreen.edu Ruth Hayes and her colleague David McAvity are creating a coordinated studies course for next year entitled "Patterns Across Space-Time." The course combines art and physics. The course begins by asking the question “What makes something a pattern?” after which students will engage in a variety of activities to explore the nature and structure of different kinds of patterns. Students will work to develop techniques of observation, measurement, documentation, analysis and description. They will employ drawing, time-lapse photography, motion analysis and animation to study and represent phenomena they have observed. They will use clay to explore shape and spatial relationships.
